Ruth Hadley Lindley

 

Pennsylvania is one of the 13 original states and was originally founded in 1681 as a result of a royal land grant to William Penn, the son of the state's namesake.

A grist mill is a building where a miller grinds gain into flour.

Ruth Hadley was born on February 6, 1712/3 in Ireland. Her parents were Simon and Ruth Hadley.

She married Thomas Lindley in 1731 at the New Garden Monthly Meeting in Chester County, Pennsylvania. Thomas was born April 25, 1706 in Ireland. His parents were James and Eleanor Lindley.

Ruth and Thomas' children included:

Catherine Lindley (1732, married William White),
James Lindley (1735),
Simon Lindley (1737/8),
Ruth Lindley (1745, married Joshua Hadley),
John Lindley (1747 , married Sarah Pyle),
Mary Lindley
Elender Lindley (1750, married George Maris),
William Lindley (1742, married Mary Morton)
Thomas Lindley (1740, married Sarah Evans),
Deborah Lindley (1753, married James Newlin), and
Jonathan Lindley (1756, married Deborah Dicks).

Thomas served as a member of the Pennsylvania Provincial Assembly.

In 1753 they moved to North Carolina.They were among the early members of the Cane Creek Meeting.

In 1755 in Orange County, North Carolina

Hugh Laughlin, Planter, on the one part, and Thomas Lindley, Planter, on the other, have agreed to become partners and in joint company to erect and build a water grist mill on Cane Creek, on the south side of Haw River. The water to be taken out of that land owned by Hugh Laughlin and the mill to be built on that part owned by Thomas Lindley, 3 3/4 acres. Sept. Court 1755

He had the post office in his home, know as Lindley's Store.

His will was dated March 15, 1780.

Thomas died on September 14, 1781 in Alamance County, North Carolina. This was the day after the Battle of Lindley's Mill, which was fought adjacent to Thomas's mill.



The Society of Friends (Quakers) began in England in the 1650s, when they broke away from the Puritans. Pennsylvania was founded by William Penn, as a safe place for Friends to live and practice their faith.

I do leave Eleanor Lindley 60 pounds current money, and

I do leave William Lindley 60 pounds current money and

I do leave Thomas Lindley, Jr. 60 pounds current money, all children of my daughter Ruth Lindley, wife to Thomas Lindley and
