Pennsylvania is one of the 13 original states and was originally founded in 1681 as a result of a royal land grant to William Penn, the son of the state's namesake.

Ruth Hadley was born on February 6, 1712/3 in Ireland. Her parents were Simon and Ruth Hadley.
She married Thomas Lindley in 1731 at the New Garden Monthly Meeting in Chester County, Pennsylvania. Thomas was born April 25, 1706 in Ireland. His parents were James and Eleanor Lindley.

In 1753 they moved to North Carolina.They were among the early members of the Cane Creek Meeting.
In 1755 in Orange County, North Carolina
Hugh Laughlin, Planter, on the one part, and Thomas Lindley, Planter, on the other, have agreed to become partners and in joint company to erect and build a water grist mill on Cane Creek, on the south side of Haw River. The water to be taken out of that land owned by Hugh Laughlin and the mill to be built on that part owned by Thomas Lindley, 3 3/4 acres. Sept. Court 1755
He had the post office in his home, know as Lindley's Store.
His will was dated March 15, 1780.
Thomas died on September 14, 1781 in Alamance County, North Carolina. This was the day after the Battle of Lindley's Mill, which was fought adjacent to Thomas's mill.
